U.S. Attorney probes tribe's political donations

The U.S. Attorney's Office in New Mexico has subpoenaed all of Pojoaque Pueblo's financial records related to political donations, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

Pueblo Gov. George Rivera said the U.S. Attorney is also seeking records related to educational funds. Tribal employees have been asked to appear before a grand jury next week.

The office would neither confirm nor deny an investigation. But FBI agents have visited the reservation as well as the home of state Sen. Nancy Rodriguez, a Democrat who is a consultant for the tribe.

Rivera believes the probe is tied to his criticism of former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias. Rivera said Iglesias deserved to be fired by the Bush administration for failing to prosecute Indian Country crime.

Rivera said the investigation into the tribe started about a month after his column was published in The Santa Fe New Mexican on April 1.
