Quechan Nation proposes riverfront development

The Quechan Nation is working with the city of Yuma, Arizona, on a riverfront park.

The $1.2 million Quechan Nature Park would be located on 10 acres of tribal land along the Colorado River. Plans call for picnic facilities, trails, docks and swimming.

The tribe and the city are seeking funds from the Arizona State Parks Local, Regional and State Parks Heritage Fund to proceed. They will obtain matching funds from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

Quechan Nation President Mike Jackson said the park will generate economic activity. The site is sometimes used for "illegal partying and unwanted drug activity," a consultant said.
