Arizona bill seeks more reservation teachers

An Arizona House committee endorsed a bill that seeks to bring more teachers to public schools on reservations.

The House Higher Education Committee unanimously approved HB 2331 yesterday. The bill would offer loans that students could repay by teaching at a reservation school.

Rep. Albert Tom, a Democrat, introduced the bill and another one aimed at getting teachers into science classrooms. His includes most of the Navajo, Hopi, Hualapai and Havasupai reservations.

Leland Leonard, a representative of Navajo Nation Joe Shirley Jr., testified in support of the bill. The Hopi Tribe and the Arizona Education Association also support the measure.
