Fond du Lac Band elects first woman as chair

Members of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota elected Karen Diver as their first female chair.

Diver beat challenger Clarence "Chuck" Smith with 64 percent of the vote. "Fond du Lac has been so progressive as a tribal nation, there are so many opportunities available to us," she said after her victory was confirmed, The Duluth News Tribune reported.

Diver hopes to bring more accountability to the tribe. She is concerned about $119 million in debt the tribe has taken on for a casino expansion project.

Diver replaces Peter Defoe, who abruptly resigned last September.
