County won't take stand on Klamath land return

After more than five hours of testimony, commissioners in Klamath County, Oregon, agreed not to take a stand on the return of 690,000 acres to the Klamath Tribes.

The move came after Klamath Chairman Allen Foreman offered to work with the Klamath Basin Alliance, a group opposed to the land transfer. The group's leader tentatively agreed.

The tribes lost their 1.2 million-acre reservation when they were terminated by the federal government. Of the land base, 690,000 acres became part of the Fremont-Winema National Forest.
