Exhibit honors Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico, opened a yearlong exhibit on the works of the late Santa Clara Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde.

Velarde died in January 2006 at the age of 87. By adopting painting as her medium, he was considered a trailblazer for Indian women artists.

"I want the Earth to remember me through my works," she says in a DVD accompanying the exhibit, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

The exhibit features 58 paintings of the 84 that were commissioned by Bandelier National Monument during the federal government's New Deal era.
