First Indian nominated to state university board

Wayne Newell, a member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, has been nominated to the board of trustees for the University of Maine System.

Newell serves as director of bilingual education for the Indian Township School. He has worked as a planner for the tribe and helped developed the tribe's health care system.

If confirmed, Newell would be the first Indian to serve as a trustee. "Wayne brings a unique perspective, level of skills and experience to the board," said Gov. John Baldacci (D).
