Chilocco celebrates listing on historic register

Alumni, tribal leaders, former employees and Oklahoma state officials celebrated the placement of the old Chilocco Indian School on the National Register of Historic Places.

About 300 attended a ceremony on Sunday, The Arkansas City Traveler reported. They talked about restoring the 10,000-acre campus to its former glory.

The Otoe-Missouria, Ponca, Pawnee, Kaw and Tonkawa tribes control the school site. They are working with the Chilocco Alumni Association to renovate the school, which educated tribal students from 1884 to 1980.
