Fort Peck Tribes hope to tap Missouri River

The Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana are proposing a major project to tap into the Missouri River.

The tribes have a right to take more than a million acre-feet from the river every year. Right now, the tribes only use 3 percent of the water, for small irrigation projects and a drinking water system.

Tribal leaders hope to change that with a $45 million project that would be used for a 15,000-acre agricultural development. They believe the project will generate jobs and stimulate the economy.
