Letter: Nominate Indian to South Dakota court

"I understand from reading Dave Kranz's column in recent months that Ron Volesky of Huron is being considered for an appointment to the circuit court judgeship in the 1st Judicial Court.

I have known Volesky for many years, and I believe that he would make an excellent judge for the people of our state. Volesky has practiced law for many years in Huron and is a highly respected attorney. I believe that he is well-qualified in every aspect to represent the people of this state on the bench. Volesky is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and was born and raised in our state.

Also, it should be kept in mind that the appointment of Volesky would mark the first time that a Native American sat as a circuit court judge in our state's history. As a Native American myself, I feel we need to have representation in the state's judgeships."
