Coyote Valley Band on new track with new chairman

At age 28, John Feliz Jr. is one of the youngest tribal leaders in California.

Feliz was elected chairman of the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians in 2004. He took control after ousting his cousin, Priscilla Hunter, the tribe's longtime leader, and several other council members.

Hunter, who is highly regarded among California Indians, and the former council members now face 39 charges of theft, misuse of funds, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, tax evasion and failure to file tax returns.

Feliz hopes to change course by bringing more accountability to the tribe and by attacking methamphetamine, substance abuse and housing issues. He said Hunter and her colleagues left a $5 million deficit.

Hunter, meanwhile, is fighting the federal charges. She admits to failing to file tax returns but says the other charges are baseless.

She also fears Feliz and his allies will try to disenroll her and her family. Feliz says he considers Hunter to be his family.
