Stephen Mistaken Chief, WWII veteran, dies at 84

Stephen Mistaken Chief, a veteran of World War II who fought for equal benefits for Native soldiers, died last Wednesday. He was 84.

Mistaken Chief was a member of the Blood Tribe of Alberta. He enlisted in the Canadian army at the age of 17 and fought in one of the most violent battles of the war.

But when he returned, he found out that he didn't qualify for the same benefits as non-Natives. So he embarked on a campaign to change government policies. He later sat on the tribal council and worked on housing, agriculture, human rights and education.
