Memorial service for McKenzie, first Navajo doctor


Hundreds attended a memorial service for Taylor McKenzie, the first Navajo surgeon and former vice president of the Navajo Nation who died April 13 at the age of 76.

Through his longtime career in public and Indian health, as well as his service to the Navajo Nation, McKenzie touched the lives of many. Friends and colleagues recalled his dedication to improving the lives of tribal members.

"Dr. McKenzie took the health care of the Navajo Nation to a higher level," former president Kelsey Begaye said, The Gallup Independent reported. McKenzie served under Begaye.
