Power company drops support for CIRI wind farm

Alaska's biggest electric company has withdrawn support for a wind farm proposed by Cook Inlet Region Inc., an Alaska Native corporation.

Chugach Electric Association had agreed to consider buying power from CIRI's proposed farm on Fire Island. But a new majority on the electric company's board says it will review the project to ensure it is cost effective.

CIRI plans to spend $151 million to $227 million to develop the wind farm. The Legislature's capital budget proposal contains $24 million for the project, and CIRI is lining up a partner to finance the rest of the venture.
