Institute of American Indian Arts names president

Robert Martin, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is the new president of the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico.

Martin has a long record in tribal college affairs. He was president of Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institution from 1989 to 1999, president of the then-Haskell Indian Junior College in Kansas and president of the Tohono O’odham Community College in Arizona.

Martin comes to IAIA from the University of Arizona, where he is the associate head of the American Indian Studies Programs. He said he was “very excited” about his new post.
