Opinion: Eastern Band honors warrior tradition

"Our veterans proudly served this country before we were citizens and before we had any rights as citizens. Many returning veterans from World War I and World War II did not have the right to vote.

But our community heard the call to service and our service members continue that tradition today. Cherokees have served in combat and have received numerous recognitions, including the Medal of Honor. We are proud to defend our land and to belong to this the nation.

This Memorial Day my family will go to the cemetery to work, remember and to teach another generation that this day is an honor for them.

My family taught me the tradition of remembering those who came before so we can use the lessons of their work to strengthen another generation.

Our remembrance is an honor which instills integrity and pride in our history.

This integrity will guide our youth to lead and defend this country with honor in the 21st century."
