Specialist helps protect Washoe sites from fire

As the environmental specialist for the Washoe Tribe, Darrel Cruz has a unique job whenever fires arise in the area.

Cruz ensures that fire crews don't damage archaeological and sacred sites. "I've been in front of the 'dozers and tell them to go around an area when it's possible," he tells The Nevada Appeal.

Cruz, who is a trained wildland firefighter, was on the front lines during the recent Angora Fire. He found two sites that needed protection during the fire suppression effort.
