The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina is finishing construction on a housing development and has two more projects in the works.
The first phase of a 40-unit townhouse development opens next month. With easy to maintain units and a location close to town, the project has proven to be popular among tribal members. There are already 20 families waiting to move in.
The tribe's other two developments will offer more traditional lot-style setups. “It is really exciting,” Paulette Cox of the Housing and Community Development Division told The Asheville Citizen-Times. “There is such a need for housing.”
Thanks to gaming proceeds, the tribe is able to set aside 3.5 percent of revenues to build homes.
