Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colorado) is concerned about the environmental impacts of the Navajo Nation's proposed power plant.
The tribe wants to build a $3 billion, coal-fired power plant near Shiprock, New Mexico. Emissions would affect the Four Corners area, including southwestern Colorado.
"I have some very deep concerns about Desert Rock and the proposal," Salazar said in a visit to Durango, The Durango Herald reported. "We already have air-quality issues here in southwestern Colorado."
The tribe says the power plant will generate jobs and revenues. Opponents, including tribal members who live near the site, cite the potential for pollution.
