Seminole Tribe reflects on 50 years of success

The Seminole Tribe of Florida marked the 50th anniversary of the tribal constitution on Tuesday.

Tribal members gathered under an oak tree on August 21, 1957, to create a modern government. The effort prevented them from being terminated by the U.S. government.

The tribe has since grown to 3,300 members and from three to six reservations. With gaming, hotel and other ventures, the tribe sees more than $500 million in profits, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

"Thank God for 50 years together and … all we have accomplished," Chairman Mitchell Cypress said at the gathering, the paper reported.
