Viejas Band looks for outside water sources

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has signed a letter of intent to buy water from a water district.

The reservation has more than enough water, an expert recently said. But tribal leaders want to ensure they have enough for future development.

“We've learned from other tribes' mistakes,” council member Alan Barrett told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “We can basically use our water for our own needs and not deplete the water system that we have.”

The tribe operates a casino, outlet mall and RV park on its land.
