Kevin Gover named new director of NMAI

Kevin Gover has been named the new director of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Gover, 52, is a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. He previously served as assistant secretary for Indian affairs during the last three years of the Clinton administration and was most recently a professor at Arizona State University.

“I am deeply honored to be the next director of the National Museum of the American Indian,” said Gover in a statement today.

Gover replaces Rick West, a member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. West oversaw the museum from its creation in 1990 to its grand opening in September 2004.

“The museum's mission of educating the public about living Native cultures is an important and challenging one, and I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation created by the museum’s founding director, Rick West," Gover said.
