BIA seeks closure of troubled mobile home park

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is asking a federal judge to shut down a mobile home park on the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation.

Government lawyers say living and safety conditions at the Desert Mobile Home Park are inadequate. They said Harvey Duro Sr., a tribal member who owns the park, has failed to live up to a 2004 court agreement to fix the facility.

"More than three years have passed ... and Mr. Duro has failed to comply with his court-ordered duties," court papers cited by The Riverside Press-Enterprise state. "The residents of the trailer park continue to live in an environment that jeopardizes their welfare due to inadequate sewage systems, impure water, and a jerry-rigged electrical supply."

The park is home to more than 2,000 people.
