Alaska Native scholar wins 'genius' grant

An Alaska Native anthropologist has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation.

Sven Haakanson, 41, is among the 24 MacArthur Fellows announced on Monday. He was selected for his efforts to preserve and revitalize Alutiiq language and culture.

"I was shocked," Haakanson told The Anchorage Daily News after he was informed his cash, sometimes known as a "genius" grant.

Haakanson received degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Harvard University. He serves as executive director of the Alutiiq Museum.
