Former residential school students await payout

Former students of Native residential schools in Canada attended a four-day information and healing session last week in Saskatchewan.

The students are eligible for a share of a $1.9 billion residential school abuse settlement. Each student will receive $10,000, plus $3,000 for every year spent in school. The average payment will be about $28,000.

Services Canada took applications from about 1,200 people at the session in Regina. "I grew up on rags … but when I get this money, I'm going to live brand new," Roma Friday, whose brother committed suicide at a residential school, told CBC News.
