Muscogee Nation helps inmates re-enter society

The Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma is helping imprisoned tribal members re-enter society after they finish their sentences.

The Muscogee Nation Reintegration Program reaches out to tribal members who are near their release date. Caseworkers help them find jobs, housing and get reacquainted with life on the outside.

"The alternative is for them to return to prison, and we can't have that," tribal legislator Keeper Johnson, who developed the program, told The Tulsa World. "These people are Creeks; they are our citizens."

According to Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 8.7 percent of state inmates are American Indian.
