Appeal of Shakopee land-into-trust decision weighed

Local governments in Minnesota have until October 29 to challenge a trust land acquisition for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Scott County and the city of Shakopee have been fighting the tribe's request to have 752 acres placed in trust. The county and city don't want the land removed from the tax rolls and wanted to stop future acquisitions.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs agreed to acquire the land despite the objections. A notice was published in the Federal Register yesterday, triggering a 30-day period to file a lawsuit in federal court.
