Blackfeet player a first pick in basketball draft

Mike Chavez, a member of the Blackfeet Nation of Oklahoma, was a first-round pick in the Continental Basketball Association's first draft.

The 6-foot-7 Chavez was drafted by the Great Falls Explorers in Montana. He said he was happy to be staying close to home.

"To play before my friends and family again is something I've looked forward to," Chavez told the Associated Press.

Chavez played for the University of Montana. He graduated this past spring with two degrees.

The CBA includes the Yakama Sun-Kings, a team owned by the Yakama Nation of Washington.
