Navajo woman wins top New Mexico business award

Sharlene Begay-Platero, a member of the Navajo Nation, was named Developer of the Year by the state of New Mexico.

Begay-Platero works for the tribe's Division of Economic Development. She helps manage the tribe's industrial sites and works on other economic development projects.

"I am trying to help in the Navajo way — Ké; I am trying to help my relatives get a job," she told The Farmington Daily Times.

Begay-Platero received her award at the 2007 Governor's Summit on Economic Development. She says she is the first Native person to win the award. She is the only Native person who is active in the NMIDEA association, the Times reported.
