Ralph Sturges, the longtime chief of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, died on Monday. He was 88. Sturges was chosen as chief for life in 1992. Two years later, the tribe won federal recognition, settled its land claim and opened a highly successful casino. "We will miss his leadership, and his passing leaves a void not easily filled in our tribal government," said Chairman Bruce "Two Dogs" Bozsum. Sturges was a veteran of World War II and fought in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star and several other medals.
