Snohomish Tribe prepares recognition lawsuit

width= The unrecognized Snohomish Tribe of Washington is preparing a lawsuit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribe applied for federal recognition through the BIA. But the agency said the tribe only met three out of seven mandatory criteria.

Snohomish leaders blame the recognized Tulalip Tribes for the defeat. They say the Tulalips don't want to share treaty rights, federal funds and other rights and benefits.

The Tulalips say they are the successors to the historic Snohomish Tribe, one of the signatories to the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott. Only the Snohomish who moved to the reservation can be federally recognized, according to the Tulalips.
