Morongo Band raises money for stricken fire chief

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is raising money to help its new fire chief, Phil Kelleher, who has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.

The tribe has donated $15,000 to a fund for Kelleher and his family. The tribe is also hosting a "Ride for Phil" on October 21 [Yahoo Group].

The disease, known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to muscle weakness and atrophy.

“Phil Kelleher has been an outstanding addition to our staff since joining us and when he told us the news of his ALS diagnosis, we wanted to show our support immediately,” Morongo Chairman Robert Martin said in a statement.
