Ho-Chunk president questioned for 1972 conviction

In 1972, Wilfrid Cleveland was convicted of assaulting a deputy sheriff in Wisconsin, a crime that might lead to his removal as president of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

The tribe's constitution bars convicted felons from serving as president. Tim Whiteagle, a tribal member, says Cleveland's crime counts as a felony under information from the state Crime Information Bureau.

Bur Cleveland says the tribal courts have already determined the 1972 conviction is not a felony. He started his term in July.
