"The oil boom in North Dakota is no secret. In fact, it may be on the lips of every North Dakotan, but especially the people of the Fort Berthold Reservation. There are few conversations these days that don't end with a gleeful chuckle at our good luck - good luck that we sit somewhere atop the Bakken Formation oil patch.
When we run out of oil talk, my thoughts turn to our community. We're a poor community, and I wonder what that instant wealth may do to us.
I remember when tribal members got some $3,000 or $4,000 for land taken for the Garrison Dam, which created Lake Sakakawea, I told my sister, Liz. We laughed at some of the stories surrounding that windfall.
In those days, few of the outlying farms and ranches on the reservation even had electricity. When the money came to the people, so did a lot of fast-talking salesmen. Some of the elders were talked into buying refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. But they couldn't use the products because they didn't have electricity, which is what my sisters and I found humorous in memory."
