Ballot measure seeks Indian center at Alcatraz

A proposition on the February 2008 ballot in San Francisco seeks to develop an Indian cultural center on Alcatraz Island.

The former prison is currently managed by the National Park Service. The nonbinding Proposition C urges the city to acquire the island to develop what supporters are calling a global peace center.

Sponsors of the proposition include Marshall "Golden Eagle" Jack, American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks, Lakota Chief Avrol Looking Horse and Rosemary Cambra, the chairwoman of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe.
