Cheyenne River Sioux soldier killed in Afghanistan

Tanner O'Leary, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday.

O'Leary, 23, was a corporal in the U.S. Army. He died when a roadside bomb exploded in Musa Qal'eh.

O'Leary, a father of a four-year-old daughter, is the second tribal member to die in the Middle East. Pfc. Sheldon Hawk Eagle, 21, was killed in Iraq in November 2003.

"He was our pride and joy," his grandmother Arlene O'Leary told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

O'Leary's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Army Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
