Homelessness common among Minnesota tribes

More than 1,200 Indians in northern Minnesota are homeless or live in overcrowded homes, according to a study by the Wilder Foundation.

The foundation used a broader definition of homeless to examine housing conditions on the Red Lake, Leech Lake, White Earth, Mille Lacs, Bois Forte and Fond du Lac reservations. Researchers also conducted interviews among the tribes.

The study found extremely high rates of overcrowding. Nearly half of the homeless or nearly homeless were children and less than a third of adults were employed.

Of the tribes, only the Red Lake Nation operates a homeless shelter. The other tribes have long waiting lists for housing, officials said.
