Omnibus includes $28M for Mni Wiconi water project

The fiscal year 2008 omnibus appropriations act includes $28 million for the Mni Wiconi water project in South Dakota.

The money will be used to continue construction of the project, which will bring water to the Pine Ridge Reservation, the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation. Non-reservation communities are also being served.

The project began 20 years ago but still isn't complete. So far, $330 million has been spent in federal, tribal and state money, The Rapid City Journal reported.

The consolidated appropriations act was passed by the Senate on Tuesday and by the House on Wednesday. President Bush is expected to sign it into law.
