Blog: South Dakota tribes can't donate to campaigns

"When I learned that Sen. Theresa Two Bulls, D-Pine Ridge, had introduced a bill that would strike a provision of state law banning political candidates, committees or parties from accepting donations from Native American tribes my first question was simple:

Candidates, candidates and committees can’t accept contributions from tribes?

Here’s the provision of state law as it exists: “No candidate, political committee or political party may accept any contribution from any state, state agency, political subdivision of the state, foreign government, Indian tribe, federal agency or federal government.”

Two Bulls and a scattering of sponsors want to strike “Indian tribes.”

And I’m trying to figure out why we shouldn’t."
