Alaska Natives seek law enforcement boost

An Alaska Senate task force is calling for increases in the state's Village Public Safety Officer program.

The Alaska Senate VPSO Task Force said officers deserve to be paid $21 an hour. Currently, officers receive $16.55 an hour.

The task force also wants to more than double the size of the VPSO positions -- from 51 to 115. That would mean each village with a more than 150 would get one officer and villages with more than 500 people would get two officers.

Task force documents can be found here.
