Morongo Band concerned about city's airport plan

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians wants to work with the city of Banning, California, to develop a master plan for the local airport.

The city council is ready to make a decision on the $17 million plan but postponed action at the tribe's request. The tribe is currently campaigning heavily for an Indian gaming ballot proposition.

With the election fast approaching, the city council is due to take up the plan on March 11. Tom Linton, the director of planning and construction services for the Morongo Band, said the tribe wants a voice in the process because the airport is adjacent to 640 acres of tribal land.
