Police claim officers assaulted at Mohawk protest

The Ontario Provincial Police says two officers were assaulted on Tuesday during the ongoing Mohawk occupation of a quarry.

The officers were on their way to meet with Mohawk elders from the Tyendinaga Territory. The OPP says protesters accosted the officers, assaulted them and damaged a police cruiser.

Mohawk protesters have occupied the quarry since March 2007. They say the land belongs to the Tyendinaga Territory.

The OPP is being sued by the former chief of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Police. Larry Hay was fired after accusing the OPP of "deep-seated racism" against Natives.
