Uranium exploration allowed near Grand Canyon

The U.S. Forest Service is allowing a British company to explore for uranium at seven sites in the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona.

The sites are within a few miles of the southern rim of the Grand Canyon. They are also not far from the western edge of the Navajo Nation, where uranium drilling is outlawed.

Coconino County has voted to oppose any uranium development. Supervisors said they were influenced in part by the devastating impact that uranium has had on the Navajo Nation.

If Vane Mineral finds uranium, it has to seek approval to mine from the Forest Service.
