Harry Gilmore, former Quapaw chairman, dies at 91

Harry F. Gilmore, a former chairman of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, died on February 14. He was 91.

Gilmore served as chairman for two terms from 1986 to 1990. "Harry was someone we loved and looked up to," said Lloyd Buffalo, a current business committee member who served as vice chairman under Gilmore.

Gilmore was born in 1916 in Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and as a vice president of the National Congress of American Indians.

"He was an important member of our tribe, and we are saddened by this loss. We are like a big family, and Harry was one of our best known leaders because he had been around for as long as anyone can remember. We’re really going to miss him," said John Berrey, the tribe's current chairman.

Gilmore died in Sierra Vista, Arizona, where he had been living for the past seven years. He is survived by : his wife, Julia Chapin Gilmore; a sister, Gladys and nephew, Charles Hirsch; and five children: Buddy, Bonnie, Jimmy, Cathy and Vance.
