Column: Sioux teen eyes career in social work

"This is what Alex Schierbeck knows about chess:

• Plan several moves ahead.

• Learn as much as you can about a subject. Advertisement

• Even in a tough spot you have options

That's why he applies what he has learned from the centuries-old game to his life as a teenager in 2008.

To be accurate, not everything the 17-year-old has learned in life has come from the game of chess - but close.

"I love chess," Alex says. "I mean, that's how I look at things through life, that it's chess. You get in difficult situations, but there are ways to get out of it."

Alex knows about difficult situations - more on that later - but he knows even more about getting out of them.

And setting goals.

And going after what he wants."
