Editorial: Apology long overdue to Native people

"In some ways, it's difficult to believe we haven't done this long ago: Formally apologize for the long history of U.S. wrongs against Native Americans - as called for in an amendment to the Native American health bill recently passed unanimously by the Senate and pending in the House.

It seems like a small thing to ask, and one that could potentially help build bridges between Indians and the rest of us.

So why the hesitation?

All of us recognize the power of saying sorry on a personal level.

It might be hard to face our qualms about this apology. But if it helps ease feelings of abandonment and indifference of even only some of its intended recipients, an apology to Native Americans is worth it, and the right thing to do."
