Alaska Native land swap a hot topic at conference

A proposed land swap between the federal and an Alaska Native was a big topic at the Tanana Chiefs Conference this week.

Tribal leaders oppose the swap. They say environmentally sensitive land in the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge will be harmed when Doyon Ltd. drills for oil and gas.

TCC rejected a resolution that opposed drilling in the area. Instead, a resolution that calls for an extension of the comment period on the land swap was approved.

TCC met in Fairbanks this week.
