Chippewa Cree Tribe rescinds anti-slander law

The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana has rescinded its controversial anti-slander law.

The tribal council voted 8-0 on Friday after tribal members presented a petition that opposed the law. The petition said the law violated the tribal constitution and tribal traditions.

The law, passed in January, made it a crime to slander a tribal council member of a tribal employee. Offenders could have their property seized or could be expelled from the tribe permanently.
