New English-only bill exempts Native languages

A Republican lawmaker in Oklahoma is introducing a new English-only bill but says Native languages will not be affected.

Rep. Randy Terrill says the exemption makes the bill "legally air tight." Opposition from tribes derailed a similar measure last year.

The bill would amend the constitution to require all government business be conducted in English. Terrill says it costs too much money to translate documents into other languages.

Terrill authored House Bill 1804, which forces businesses to verity the legal status of their workers. Tribes appear to be exempt from the new law.
