Judge upholds charges in Narragansett raid case

A judge in Rhode Island upheld most of the charges against seven members of the Narragansett Tribe who were arrested during a raid of the reservation.

The tribal members asked Judge Susan E. McGuirl to dismiss all of the charges against them. But she only dismissed one charge against one of the defendants, based on a technicality.

The seven Narragansetts -- including Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas and two tribal council members -- began their defense yesterday. They are charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest during the state's raid on July 14, 2003.
